What happened
ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE: MAN) grew third-quarter revenue 4.4% to $4.84 billion, but gross profit slipped 0.2% to $767.3 million. That split says the staffing recovery is reaching the top line faster than the gross spread earned on that revenue.
The October 15 results showed organic constant-currency revenue growth of 6%. Management credited strength in the Manpower brand, especially in the United States. Experis and Talent Solutions also improved sequentially.
Reported selling and administrative expense fell 2.5% to $685.0 million. That cost decline lifted operating profit 23.7% to $82.3 million, even though gross-profit dollars were slightly lower.

Why it matters
The margin bridge is the useful part. Divide $767.3 million of gross profit by $4.84 billion of revenue, and third-quarter gross margin was 15.85%.
A year earlier, $768.9 million divided by $4.634 billion was 16.59%. The decline was about 74 basis points. Operating margin moved the other way. $82.3 million divided by $4.84 billion equals 1.70%, up from 1.44% a year earlier.
ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE: MAN) therefore produced operating leverage through lower overhead, not through a healthier gross spread. That is progress, but it leaves the quality of the recovery unsettled.
The strongest counterargument is that staffing recoveries can begin with volume and share gains before mix and pricing improve. Organic revenue growth and a better Experis trend support that view.
Cash conversion remains the harder check. ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE: MAN) used $137.0 million of operating cash during the first nine months. That improved from $283.0 million used a year earlier.

What's next
Management expects fourth-quarter diluted earnings per share of $1.03 to $1.13 and a 44% effective tax rate. The range gives investors an earnings target, but not a gross-margin answer.
The next report should show whether organic revenue growth produces higher gross-profit dollars and whether gross margin stops falling. Operating cash flow should also turn positive as receivables and payroll timing normalize.
For now, ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE: MAN) supports the cyclical-recovery case but does not settle it. Revenue momentum improved, while cost cuts did most of the work below gross profit.
