Why it matters
OptimistFi's case is that Hudbay's value depends on whether capital-heavy mines can turn favorable metal prices into cash without balance-sheet dilution. This approval strengthens that case because Copper World is now sanctioned. Hudbay also says its first capital contribution is deferred to 2028.
The build carries initial growth capital of $2.07 billion, or $1.84 billion net of the precious metals stream deposit. Hudbay says Mitsubishi will provide $600 million of initial joint-venture equity and Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. will provide a $230 million deposit.
The plan also includes about $650 million of project-level debt. Hudbay says that represents less than 30% leverage. Hudbay's contributions are expected to be about $500 million, or less than 25% of initial growth capital.
The base case shows average annual copper production of 102,000 tonnes over the first 10 years. It also shows $1.2 billion of after-tax NPV and a 17% IRR at $5.00 copper.
The extension case shows $2.5 billion of after-tax NPV and a 19% IRR at $5.00 copper. At $6.00 copper, Hudbay says that rises to $4.0 billion and 24%. The pro forma returns still depend on copper at $5.00 to $6.00 a pound and on executing a $2.07 billion build.

What's next
Hudbay said closing of the upsized credit facilities is expected in the fourth quarter. The facilities will total $700 million, up from $450 million, and can be increased by another $150 million at Hudbay's discretion during the four-year tenor.
A timely close would support the low-leverage funding plan. A delay would leave the project leaning more heavily on existing cash and operating cash flow. First production remains targeted for the second half of 2029, so on-time development is the next visible test.
