Why it matters

The release shows better sales, but operating income and net income still fell.

Net sales rose $191.4 million year over year. Gross profit rose only 2.6% to $1.42 billion, and gross margin fell to 36.4% from 37.4%.

Management said higher transportation and fuel costs, plus incremental price-value investments, drove the margin decline.

Comparable store sales rose only 0.4%, after 3.9% growth in the prior-year quarter. SG&A increased to 28.6% of sales from 28.1%.

The operating-leverage recovery case still depends on stronger comp sales and better margin control in later quarters.

What's next

Tractor Supply Company will hold a conference call today, Thursday, October 22, 2026 at 10 a.m. ET.

It reaffirmed fiscal 2026 net sales growth of 2.5% to 3.5%, comparable store sales of (1%) to flat, operating margin rate of 8.0% to 8.3% and diluted EPS of $1.78 to $1.88.

It also reaffirmed adjusted net income of $990 million to $1.05 billion and adjusted EPS of $1.90 to $2.00.

If sales and margins move toward the top of those ranges, that would support the case. Softer comp sales or margin pressure would weaken it.
