What happened
Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) said Denise Johnson will retire from Resource Industries effective Feb. 1, 2027. Derrick York, who is now president of Solar Turbines and a Caterpillar senior vice president, will become group president of Resource Industries on Nov. 1, 2026. Johnson will move into an advisory role when York takes over, according to the filing.
Caterpillar said the handoff is meant to ensure a seamless leadership transition. Johnson has led Resource Industries since 2016, after joining the company in 2011. Caterpillar said she restored the unit to profitability and delivered its strongest financial performance in more than a decade.
Since 2023, York has led the global business unit that provides industrial gas turbines and compressors. The release says he has also served as senior vice president of Caterpillar's Oil Gas and Marine division and held leadership roles in finance and corporate development.
Earlier in his career, York worked in banking and public accounting. He has a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master's degree in business administration from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

Why it matters
OptimistFi's case is that Caterpillar turns cyclical equipment orders into durable cash through its global dealer network, aftermarket parts and services, and captive financing. This filing does not change that view because it shows an internal succession at Resource Industries.
York has spent 16 years with Caterpillar, and his work in a global business unit suggests continuity in a senior post. Caterpillar said 2025 sales and revenues were $67.6 billion, so investors will watch leadership at a segment Johnson helped return to profitability. The release also says York has worked in banking and public accounting.

What's next
York becomes group president of Resource Industries on Nov. 1, 2026, and Johnson retires on Feb. 1, 2027. Johnson will stay in an advisory role during the handoff. Investors can watch whether Resource Industries keeps its profitability and mining autonomy and technology focus under York. A smooth handoff would support the unchanged case, while a break in that continuity would weaken it.
