Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that Travelers turns underwriting scale, disciplined risk selection and a large invested float into steady earnings and cash for shareholders. This filing supports that view. Nine-month net income rose to $5.84 billion from $3.79 billion, a 53.9% increase. Core income also increased to $5.8 billion from $3.81 billion.

The combined ratio stayed below 100% in the quarter and for the nine months, which means underwriting was profitable after losses and expenses. Adjusted book value per share was $172.47, up 9% from year-end 2025. Book value per share was $141.48. Higher catastrophe losses, a 7% drop in Personal Insurance net written premiums and a 12% decline in shareholders equity are the main caveats in the release.

What's next

The board declared a regular quarterly dividend of $1.25 per share. It is payable December 31, 2026 to shareholders of record at the close of business on December 10, 2026. Management will discuss the release on a webcast at 9:00 a.m. Eastern on Friday, October 16, 2026.

A follow-through quarter with a similar combined ratio and continued capital returns would strengthen the case. Another jump in catastrophe losses would weaken it.
