Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) margin jumps as ad revenue guide slips lower

What happened

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) said October 20, 2026 that Q3 revenue rose 12% year over year to $12.9 billion. Operating margin was 34.6%, up from 28.2% in Q3 25 and above forecast, mainly because expenses landed later than expected. Diluted EPS was $0.87, compared with $0.59 in Q3 25.

Why it matters

The Q3 margin beat matters because it shows the company turning revenue growth into more operating profit. The gap was 6.4 percentage points versus Q3 25, which is the clearest comparison in the filing. Net cash from operating activities was $3.2 billion, versus $2.8 billion a year earlier. Free cash flow was $2.9 billion, versus $2.7 billion.

OptimistFi's case is that Netflix converts global scale and pricing power into durable profit and cash flow, and the filing supports that view. The company said member response to 2026 price changes was in line with prior changes and its expectations, which suggests engagement remains healthy. The buybacks and 2026 margin guide also point to continued repurchases and high profitability.

The main caveat is that 2026 ad revenue is now expected at $2.7 billion, versus approximately $3 billion previously, because some ad product capabilities are rolling out more slowly. The Q4 margin guide also includes a 120-basis-point drag from headcount reductions.

What's next

The first tranche of new market launches will happen in March 2027, with nine countries in EMEA plus Colombia, Peru and New Zealand. Netflix said it will introduce its advertising tier to 15 new countries in 2027.

A timely rollout would help the ad revenue outlook. More delays would keep pressure on the revised $2.7 billion target. Those launches are the next dated test for the ad business the filing lays out.
