Why it matters
OptimistFi's case is that FDBC's earnings recovery needs to prove durable. This release strengthens that case because the quarter delivered higher income, a 3.30% net interest margin and a 56.11% efficiency ratio.
Average loans increased $237.3 million, and lower funding costs helped push the FTE net interest margin up 35 basis points to 3.30%. By OptimistFi's count, nine-month net income increased $3.9 million year over year.
The filing says that came mainly from $8.6 million more net interest income and $1.4 million more non-interest income. The main caveat is that the quarter also included a $0.3 million gain on the sale of bank property.
Non-interest expense rose $1.5 million, and the provision for credit losses on loans increased $0.9 million from a year earlier. Deposit growth of $142.9 million helped fund loan growth and higher cash balances, while short-term borrowings rose to $132.7 million.
The filing also said insured and collateralized deposits were about 72% of total deposits. Shareholders' equity increased to $247.0 million, and the company said it remained well capitalized with Tier 1 capital at 9.64% of total average assets.
Asset quality stayed controlled. Non-performing assets were $2.6 million, or 0.08% of total assets, and net charge-offs were 0.01% of average loans.

What's next
The next quarterly report will show whether net interest income, the 3.30% net interest margin and the 56.11% efficiency ratio hold up into year end.
A steadier margin and lower credit costs would support the case, while weaker loan growth or a larger provision would weaken it.
