What Sensata Technologies (ST) Said on Its Q3 Earnings Call

Sensata Technologies (NYSE:ST) reported third-quarter 2026 results above its guidance ranges, supported by broad-based organic growth, margin expansion and strong cash generation. The quarter included a $24 million customer termination payment tied to an electric-vehicle program cancellation, though management said underlying results met or exceeded the midpoints of its outlook without that benefit.

Revenue totaled $1.004 billion, up 8% from $932 million in the prior-year quarter, or 7% on an organic basis. Excluding the termination payment, revenue would have been $980 million, representing 5% reported growth and 4% organic growth.

Adjusted operating income rose to $215 million from $180 million a year earlier, while adjusted operating margin expanded to 21.5% from 19.3%. Without the termination payment, adjusted operating income would have been $191 million and margin would have been 19.5%, an increase of 20 basis points from the prior year.

Adjusted earnings per share increased 27% year over year to $1.13, marking the company’s fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit adjusted EPS growth. Free cash flow rose 46% to $198 million, and free-cash-flow conversion reached 119% of adjusted net income.

Cash flow and balance sheet progress

Chief Executive Officer Stephan von Schuckmann said the company’s transformation has focused not only on margins and debt reduction, but also on improving cash conversion and capital allocation. Sensata said its year-to-date free cash flow was $489 million, nearly matching its record full-year 2025 free cash flow of $490 million.

The company expects full-year 2026 free-cash-flow conversion to exceed 100% of adjusted net income, supported by a shorter cash conversion cycle and improved capital expenditure efficiency.

Sensata ended the quarter with $553 million in cash and an undrawn $650 million revolving credit facility. It repurchased approximately $33 million of debt in the open market during the quarter, reducing net leverage to 2.1 times trailing 12-month adjusted EBITDA. Net debt declined from $2.6 billion at the end of 2024 to $1.9 billion as of September 2026, according to management.

Chief Financial Officer Andrew Lynch said Sensata has proactively retired nearly 80% of its nearest-term debt maturity due in 2029. The company expects interest savings to contribute approximately $0.10 in year-over-year adjusted EPS growth in 2026.

Segment performance

  • Automotive: Revenue increased 4% on a reported basis and 3% organically to $556 million, despite global light-vehicle production declining 2%. Automotive operating margin was 28.4%; excluding the termination payment, margin was 25.2%, up 150 basis points year over year.
  • Industrials: Revenue rose 13% reported and 12% organically to $210 million. Segment operating margin increased 160 basis points to 28.8%, reflecting volume growth and operating leverage.
  • Aerospace, Defense and Commercial Equipment: Revenue grew approximately 13% to $238 million, its third straight quarter of double-digit organic growth. Segment operating margin was 26.7%, compared with 27.4% a year earlier, as growth investments and product mix modestly affected profitability.

Management said automotive pricing discipline, productivity actions and cost management helped offset inflationary pressures. Lynch said price remained a net headwind of roughly 1.5% in automotive during the quarter, compared with a typical headwind near 2%, as the company either designed out costs or recovered them through customer pricing.

Sensata expects global vehicle production to decline 4% year over year in the fourth quarter, largely because of China, and expects its automotive revenue to decline by about 3%, implying approximately 1% outgrowth. Management said China remains challenging because multinational original equipment manufacturers are losing local market share and pricing pressure remains intense, though it expects growth in other global automotive regions to support its broader outgrowth strategy.

Data center and product-growth initiatives

Management highlighted data centers as a major long-term growth opportunity. Sensata’s data center revenue across its industrial and aerospace, defense and commercial equipment businesses was $27 million in 2025 and is expected to reach $48 million in 2026, a 76% increase.

The company said current data center growth has largely come from existing products and an expanded commercial presence. It has secured seven design wins spanning six hyperscale customers, including one in China, up from five wins reported in the previous quarter. Management expects those programs to begin ramping in mid-2027.

Von Schuckmann said the company’s opportunities include thermal management, electrical protection and power management as data centers shift toward liquid cooling and higher-voltage architectures. Sensata recently introduced its FL Series ultrasonic flow sensor for liquid-cooling applications and expects initial shipments by mid-2027, subject to customer timing.

The company also sees opportunities for its Dynapower business in data center power applications, including inverters, converters and rectifiers used for power and peak management. Management said Dynapower revenue is not included in its $48 million data center revenue outlook.

Fourth-quarter outlook

For the fourth quarter, Sensata forecast revenue of $942 million to $972 million, adjusted operating income of $185 million to $192 million, adjusted operating margin of 19.6% to 19.8%, and adjusted EPS of $0.95 to $0.99. At the midpoint, the outlook implies roughly 5% year-over-year revenue growth and 10% adjusted EPS growth.

Lynch said the revenue outlook reflects softer automotive production expectations and changing market conditions in China. He also noted that first-quarter revenue is not expected to rise sequentially from the fourth quarter because of automotive production seasonality, particularly a projected sequential decline in Chinese vehicle production. Sensata expects first-quarter operating margin to expand modestly year over year and continues to target 20 basis points of full-year margin expansion in 2027.
