What the charges cover
GAAP results include a net charge of $279 million, or $0.32 per diluted share. It combines $130 million of after-tax transformation strategy costs and a $182 million goodwill impairment in Supply Chain Solutions. A $33 million gain on MD-11 assets offsets part of it.
The transformation costs come from UPS's network overhaul. UPS reports $1.8 billion of benefits from these initiatives in the first nine months of 2026 and expects nearly $3 billion for the full year. It expects to exclude $1.4 billion to $1.6 billion of costs from adjusted results this year. Of that, $1.2 billion relates to the Driver Choice Program.
UPS finished the planned volume reductions from its largest customer in the second quarter of 2026. The Efficiency Reimagined initiative should run until the fourth quarter of 2027.

How the three segments compare
U.S. Domestic Package grew revenue 4.5% to $14.87 billion, helped by a 6.1% rise in revenue per piece. Average daily volume was 15.62 million pieces, below 16.15 million a year earlier. Adjusted cost per piece rose 5.5% to $13.32, so revenue per piece grew slightly faster than cost per piece.
Adjusted operating profit in the unit rose to $1.03 billion from $905 million. Adjusted operating margin rose to 7.0% from 6.4%.
International revenue rose 7.1% to $5.01 billion, helped by a 15.0% rise in revenue per piece. Operating profit was $746 million on both GAAP and adjusted bases. A year earlier it was $676 million GAAP and $691 million adjusted. The margin was 14.9%.
Supply Chain Solutions is where the decline sits. Revenue rose 18.2% to $2.98 billion, mainly on growth in forwarding and logistics, including healthcare. Adjusted operating profit fell to $274 million from $536 million. Adjusted margin fell to 9.2% from 21.3%. The year-earlier quarter included a $330 million pre-tax sale-leaseback gain, worth $0.30 of EPS.
Cash flow and the raised outlook
Cash generation is running ahead of last year. Free cash flow for the first nine months was $4.22 billion against $2.74 billion, up 53.8% by OptimistFi's calculation. Capital spending fell to $2.22 billion from $2.97 billion.
UPS now targets adjusted free cash flow of $6.1 billion for 2026. Other full-year guidance is revenue of $92.6 billion, adjusted operating profit of $8.75 billion and adjusted diluted EPS of $7.28. UPS calls these targets approximate.
For the fourth quarter, UPS expects revenue of $25.7 billion and adjusted operating profit of $3.3 billion, a step up from the quarter just reported. It confirmed capital expenditures of $3.0 billion, dividend payments of $5.4 billion subject to board approval, a tax rate of 23% and $1.3 billion of pension contributions. The dividend would absorb most of the free cash flow target.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that UPS works if its network keeps pricing power while labor and cost pressure stay contained. This quarter backs the pricing half. U.S. Domestic revenue per piece outran cost per piece and cash flow improved. The cost half is still open.
Carol Tom, the chief executive, said the results show "the continued strengthening of our business fundamentals, driven by premium growth and greater network efficiency." The numbers support that in cash flow and in U.S. Domestic quarterly profit.
The caveats are specific. Volume is falling while unit costs rise. For the nine months, U.S. Domestic adjusted operating profit slipped 3.8% to $2.79 billion from $2.90 billion. A raised outlook is management's forecast, not a reported result.
What's next
UPS's fourth-quarter report is the next test. Tom said the company is entering the holiday shipping season "from a position of strength."
If actual revenue and adjusted operating profit land near guidance, that would strengthen the case that cost savings are outrunning the cost of the overhaul. A miss on adjusted operating profit would weaken it.
