What happened
WEC Energy Group, Inc. (NYSE: WEC) raised its 2026 earnings guidance to $5.60 to $5.64 per share on Oct. 29. The new range narrows the old one of $5.51 to $5.61. OptimistFi calculates that the midpoint rose $0.06, from $5.56 to $5.62.
The company said the raise was largely due to favorable weather and capital investment supported by Very Large Customers (VLCs) in Wisconsin. The range assumes normal weather for the rest of the year.

Where the gain came from
Weather shows up in the volume data. Retail electricity deliveries, excluding the iron ore mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the VLCs, rose 3.3% in the third quarter from a year earlier. On a weather-normal basis, they rose 0.4%.
Residential use rose 5.1% and small commercial and industrial use rose 3.5%. Large commercial and industrial use, excluding the mine and VLCs, rose 1.0%.
Chairman, President and CEO Scott Lauber said results were driven by "warmer-than-normal weather, execution of our capital plan and operating efficiency."
Operating income rose to $563.7 million from $449.6 million in the quarter. Over nine months it rose to $1.98 billion from $1.79 billion. Cost of sales climbed to $2.60 billion from $2.34 billion.
Below the operating line, nine-month other income, net rose to $159.2 million from $68.4 million. Equity in earnings of transmission affiliates rose to $187.9 million from $160.3 million. Interest expense rose to $699.1 million from $667.4 million. Net income attributed to common shareholders rose $252.0 million, more than the $184.5 million rise in operating income.

Cash, capital spending and financing
Net cash from operating activities was $3.41 billion in the nine months, up from $2.95 billion. Capital expenditures, including AFUDC-Debt, were $3.32 billion, up from $3.12 billion. OptimistFi calculates that operating cash covered spending by $94.4 million.
Dividends paid on common stock came to $930.8 million. The quarterly dividend was $0.9525 per share against $0.8925 a year earlier. WEC also issued $2.40 billion of long-term debt, up from $1.94 billion, and retired $1.56 billion. It issued $382.5 million of common stock, down from $746.6 million.
Long-term debt stood at $19.72 billion on Sept. 30, up from $18.50 billion at Dec. 31, 2025. Net property, plant and equipment grew to $40.79 billion from $38.28 billion over the same stretch.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that WEC's value depends on turning necessary utility investment into approved earnings and cash without regulators or financing costs eroding returns. A guidance raise that cites capital investment, alongside growth in net property, plant and equipment, strengthens that view.
The caveat is weather. The company lists it first among the drivers of the quarter and again behind the guidance raise. The outlook already assumes normal weather ahead, so part of the third-quarter gain may not repeat.
Financing is the second watch item. Interest expense and long-term debt both rose. The company keeps paying a growing dividend while spending at a pace that left operating cash only slightly ahead of capital expenditures. The cost of funding the plan will decide how much earnings growth reaches holders.
What's next
Management scheduled a conference call for 1 p.m. Central on Oct. 29 to review the quarter and the outlook.
The next quarterly report is the first test of the new guidance range. Weather-normal delivery growth above this quarter's pace would strengthen the case. So would interest expense growing more slowly than earnings. A result that falls short of the range under normal weather would weaken it.
