What happened
AMETEK, Inc. (NYSE: AME) raised its 2026 earnings forecast on Nov. 3 after a record third quarter and the completed Indicor Instrumentation acquisition. The company ties the higher range to its third-quarter results and fourth-quarter outlook as well as the expected Indicor contribution. So the raise is not only an acquisition story.
Adjusted earnings for 2026 are now expected at $8.53 to $8.57 per diluted share, up from a prior range of $8.20 to $8.30. The low end rose $0.33 and the high end $0.27. The company said the range is up about 15% from 2025 results. It expects overall sales to rise by a mid-teens percentage.
Third-quarter sales were a record $2.22 billion against $1.89 billion a year earlier. By OptimistFi's calculation, that is a gain of $327.7 million, or 17.3%. Adjusted earnings were a record $2.21 per diluted share, up 17%. GAAP earnings were $1.85.

Why it matters
Profit grew faster than sales. Adjusted operating income rose 20% to a record $594.7 million. The adjusted operating margin was 26.8%, up 60 basis points from the third quarter of 2025. GAAP operating income was a record $584.9 million.
OptimistFi has argued that AMETEK works if its specialized instrument niches keep giving it pricing power and chances to reinvest in acquisitions, not just rising revenue. Wider margins on higher sales fit the first part of that view. The Indicor purchase fits the second.
Cash kept pace. Operating cash flow rose 27% to $560.6 million. Free cash flow was 124% of net income, up from 113% a year earlier. It was $527.4 million after $33.2 million of capital spending.

Where the margin gains came from
Both segments grew. Electronic Instruments Group sales were a record $1.44 billion, up 16%. Its adjusted operating income rose 15% to $414.6 million. Electromechanical Group sales were a record $778.0 million, up 20%. Its adjusted operating income rose 29% to $212.0 million.
The company's core margin measure strips out the dilutive effect of recent acquisitions and foreign exchange. On that basis Electronic Instruments earned 29.5%, up 0.6 percentage points from 28.9%. Electromechanical earned 27.5%, up 2.1 points from 25.4%. Consolidated core margin was 27.3% against 26.2%, a gain of 110 basis points. The 0.5-point gap between the adjusted and core consolidated margins is the dilution from acquisitions completed in the last twelve months and foreign exchange.
Adjusted earnings, debt and interest
Adjusted earnings add back $0.36 per diluted share. That covers non-cash, after-tax acquisition-related intangible amortization and transaction and integration costs. The company says it does not see these items as a sign of ongoing operating performance. The full-year guidance also counts on the expected Indicor contribution.
The balance sheet changed sharply over the nine months. Long-term debt was $6.03 billion at Sept. 30, up from $1.07 billion at Dec. 31, 2025. Goodwill rose to $10.21 billion from $7.17 billion. Short-term borrowings and the current portion of long-term debt fell to $639.8 million from $1.21 billion.
Pretax income rose to $521.9 million from $448.0 million. By OptimistFi's calculation, that is 16.5%, slower than the 19.8% rise in GAAP operating income. Interest expense rose to $39.8 million from $22.5 million a year earlier, and other expense was larger.
What's next
For the fourth quarter, AMETEK expects overall sales up in the low 20% range from a year earlier. It expects adjusted earnings of $2.26 to $2.30 per share, up 12% to 14%. Guided sales growth is above the third quarter's pace. Guided earnings growth is below the third quarter's adjusted gain.
The next test is the fourth-quarter 2026 report. Adjusted earnings at or above the low end of that range would support the raised full-year outlook. A result below it would put the new range in question.
